Dr Richard Clapp

It is with great regret that I have to tell you that Richard Clapp sadly died on Monday 1st February, as a result of a traffic accident.

Richard has been part of the Merchant’s House Trust since the beginning in 1991.   He was a Trustee, Shop Director, Guide and much more.   He worked diligently on the restoration and conservation of the Merchant’s House over the years and despite his increasing age and the loss of his wife, Susan and one of his sons, he continued to support the Merchant’s House in many ways.   He was always one of the first to respond to fundraising appeals, which recently included a generous donation to the John Sykes Memorial Fund.   It is most appropriate that John’s Fund is to be part of the fundraising for the remaining window on the front of the Merchant’s House – a project designed by Richard.   A fitting memorial to both men for whom the Merchant’s House meant so much.

These current times are so difficult for everyone and it means that we will not be able to pay our respects to Richard, but when we can we will meet and remember those who have gone during the past year in a meaningful way.

We will greatly miss Richard, but I am sure you all have memories of him in happier times.

Chair of the Trustee Board
