Description:

The second of three lectures in The Merchant's House 2020 Study Series focussing on the Reformation.

The English Reformation was marked by attacks on the visual artistic heritage of the past, and painters, glaziers and sculptors were deprived of the religious imagery which had supplied most of their predecessors’ subject matter. It seemed therefore to later romantics that the Reformation period was an unmitigated disaster for the visual arts in England. Must this view be accepted, or did new challenges and opportunities open up for the painters and sculptors of Tudor England?
