POSTPONED: Food & Dining Etiquette in the mid 17th Century

Date: 06 Jun 2020
The Merchant's House

Due to Coronavirus we regret this event has been postponed. Please check back here for updates.

Join Phil and Perry Staker (well known at Marlborough College Summer School) for a fascinating insight into mid 17th Century food and dining etiquette.

Dressed in period costume, their illustrated presentation will include:
  • what foodstuffs were available to both the rich and poor
  • how it was cooked
  • the herbs and spices used
  • some of the cookery books of the time
  • meals taken and when
  • utensils used
  • the banqueting course
  • the etiquette of dining
They will be bringing examples (copies) of glassware, pewter and pottery to look at and modern copies of some cookery books of the time. If we are lucky they may also bring some sweetmeats and marchpane (what we now call marzipan) which would have been served at the banqueting course for us to sample.

Doors open 6:45pm. Cash bar. Event starts: 7:30pm. Tickets £15  (£12 for Friends of The Merchant's House)
