The Merchant's House is known for its 17th Century provenance, however Marlborough dates back to many centuries before the 1600s, and if you ask the experts evidence can be found of a building on the site of the Merchant's House that dates from the 13th century.  We are delighted to welcome Susanna Newstead a prolific locally born author who has extensively researched this era.  Susanna brings us fascinating tales of Marlborough in the 13th century.

From the age of eight Susanna was writing stories about her home town Marlborough and Savernake Forest and continued to write for many decades to follow.  The Savernake Novels were born when one of these creations was taken out, dusted off, re-written and published, there are now twelve Savernake Novels.  These murder mysteries of the 13th century were then followed by romances of the same era and place, the Kennet Valley Tales.  The Withershynnesin the Dark - a Mediaeval historical fantasy, will be published this autumn.
Susanna will entertain and inform us on Marlborough in the early 13th century, the forest of Savernake and what it was like to live there and even dispel a few myths about what 'bad old Kind John' was really like.
She will deliver the lecture dressed in authentic 13th century costume and will have some replica and some real items on display from the era.  Susanna will interweave her fascinating talk with ancient songs which are the titles of her books.

This will be a wonderful interactive lecture not to be missed held in our beautiful Panelled Room.  Refreshments will be served at the end and there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to Susanna and buy some of her signed books.
The last event to be held in the Panelled Room before it becomes our magical Christmas Room, don't miss the chance to be in this lovely room one last time this year.
