CAPTURE THE CASTLE
THE STORY OF CASTLES THROUGH ARTISTS EYES
AN ILLUSTRATED TALK BY TIM CRAVEN
Capture the Castle will illustrate the story of British castles – from their arrival in 1066 and architectural development to its military perfection in the late 13th century; and from subsequent change of status and last hurrah in the English Civil War to ruination and discovery by artists of the Romantic Movement that inspired Gothic Revival and fantasy castles.
Tim Craven brought us his very popular talk on Norman Thelwell. Tim worked at Southampton City Art Gallery for 37 years in conservation, collection management and as Curator. He left in 2017 to pursue his own art practice and freelance curation. He formed The Arborealists in 2013 and joined The London Group in 2015. He was elected Chair of Southampton’s Museums, Archives and Galleries in 2019.
This talk is the first of two Castle lectures delivered by Tim Craven, the second is on 29th September and will look at Concrete Castles, Britain's War Defences.
