Press Release
30th June 2022
The Trustees of The Merchant’s House have given the go-ahead this week for local architect, Andrew Bumphrey, to start work on the permanent works to secure the Great Staircase and Panelled Room fireplaces. Plain supports and ties have been designed to harmonise with their surroundings while doing their job of replacing the current temporary props which have been in place for the past two months.
Alison Galvin-Wright, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said “We have given the green light for all the necessary permanent works to be carried out. We think that they will be as unobtrusive as possible. And we are trying to get the timber from Savernake. We are sure the forest would have been the source of much, if not all, of the wood used when the house was built. But finding oak that has been properly seasoned – not green oak – may be something of a challenge. Meanwhile, we have been welcoming visitors back, and the house is starting to return to the popular local attraction that we were used to having before the pandemic.”
Kim Wakeham, Trust Manager, with her team have had a busy period relocating all the usual events, along with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, while gradually returning the house to normal operations, as staff and volunteers become available.
The Merchant’s House has re-opened to visitors. ‘Free-Flow visits will be in operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the museum and selected rooms in the house will be open (£5 per person, children free). Tours will be on Thursdays and Fridays for full tours of the house with a guide (£10 per person, children free). For more information, please refer to the website.
